FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

Site Preparation

Before you buy Maroochy Green Turf, ensure area to be turfed is clear of rocks debris and other foreign objects. Remove all weeds from area, weeds may need to be sprayed with herbicide days in advance to allow poison to uptake in plant. It may be a good idea to analyse your soil type and condition as it may need soil conditioners mixed in ie gypsum for clay soils or organic material for sandy soils.

For larger areas and landscaper with machinery will need to level area then apply a level top soil (approx. 50mm depth). Check with local landscape suppliers to determine best top soil for your site.

For smaller areas you may choose to do this process yourself using manual tool ie shovel, spreader and barrow.

Your Maroochy Green Buffalo Turf should now be ready to install BUT FIRST!! Check the weather forecast, you don’t really want to be laying your turf in a heatwave or cyclone.

Consider installing an in ground watering system, you will need to plan for this prior to top soil installation. It may initially be an extra expense but it will save you hours of shifting sprinklers and deliver consistent watering levels, your Maroochy Green Turf will reap the long term rewards for years to come.

Delivery or Pick up

Maroochy Green Turf Farm location: Corner David Low Way & Godfreys Road Bli Bli.

Measure the area to be turfed. To do this simply measure 2 sides of the area and calculate ie a square area 10 metres x 10 metres = 100sqm. You may need to break areas down into smaller sections then add together at the end to get your overall figure. We’re here to help if you need assistance with this!

Call us at Maroochy Green Turf Supplies with your square meterage, preferred delivery day and preferred delivery method. Charges for delivery are as displayed on our website at maroochygreenturf.com.au

Larger deliveries ie 200sqm+ will need to be delivered via crane or fork truck.

Smaller deliveries (Local Only) can be hand unloaded by the driver to help get your Maroochy Green Turf nearer to your site if possible.

If you’re thinking about picking up your Maroochy Green Turf, here’s some measurements to help you decide:

  • Our turf slabs are ½ sqm and folded, they weigh between1-5kg depending on water content and are approx 1200mm x 400mm

  • 1 full pallet of turf = 50sqm and weighs approx 1 tonne depending on water content.

  • Turf will need to be lashed down if traveling externally ie trailer/back of ute (Tie down straps are available for purchase at pick up)

If we can, we will simply forklift your turf onto your vehicle/trailer etc, otherwise we can help you load it on. (check your vehicle or trailer GVM load ratings, we cannot assume any liability for overloading).

Laying Your New Maroochy Green Buffalo Turf

At Maroochy Green Turf we provide a turf laying service – please contact Ian on 0407 609 364 for a quote.

If you are laying the turf yourself here are some helpful tips to get the job done right.

Tools you will need are:

  • Hoses to required lengths to access all turfed areas

  • Sprinklers

  • Turf cutting tool ie a straight blade shovel sharpened at bottom edge

  • Wheel barrow or similar

Laying

  • Usually starting at the furthest area away from the delivery point is best, this way you are not continually walking on newly laid turf

  • You may wish to stagger the end lengths, this may help minimise gaps in the turf

  • Ensure that turf slabs butt neatly to each other with minimal gaps

  • Usually laying the turf on the straightest edge ends with best results

  • Avoid cutting turf to very small pieces to fit in very small spaces, it may be just as easy to apply a small amount of top dress to these areas for the turf to naturally grow into

  • If laying turf in hot weather you will need to water the turf as you are laying it. The turf is very vulnerable at this point and will be very thirsty

Watering and caring for your Maroochy Green Buffalo Turf

Once your turf has been laid it will need approximately 1-3 weeks for the turf roots to begin to reach down into the soil. During this period it is necessary to minimise any traffic on the turf ie foot traffic, playing kids and dog traffic (including dog do’s & wee’s) as tempting as it might be.

Soil underneath the turf must be kept moist, newly laid buffalo turf should not be allowed to dry out. You can check the soil saturation by simply pulling back a section of turf and pushing in screwdriver or similar, soil should be moist down to 3 inches. Once turf is rooted you wont be able to lift back a turf slab so simply use the same process directly into the turf.

Arm yourself with good watering equipment ie hoses to reach all areas and good quality sprinklers (some are better and more economical than others), you may need to purchase multiple watering stations for ease of use. Inspect the soil saturation levels daily and try to water in the early morning rather than evening, this will allow the turf to drink during the growing daylight hours and the foliage to remain dryer thus minimising attracting any fungus diseases.

  • Maintain a constant soil saturation level of approximately 3 inches below the turf – Check this daily!

  • Monitor weather forecasts, you may need to water more or less in heatwave conditions or high rainfall

  • Reduce traffic on the new turf until the turf has adequately rooted

  • Ensure that all areas are receiving enough water including the corners

  • Consider installing a pop up watering system

Fertilising

Newly laid BuffaloTurf

During the first few weeks of new growth, in most circumstances water and sunlight will be your turfs only requirements. Once the roots have taken you may apply a recommended dose of organic liquid food like seasol to help promote further root strength and growth. Its not recommended to apply any other fertiliser products during the first month after being laid.

Established Buffalo Turf

Buffalo Turf should be fertilised to maintain turf health and soil condition. Its recommended to fertilise twice yearly in April and September with a suitable slow release fertiliser for Buffalo Lawns. Sandy soils will require 3-4 yearly applications. Ensure you follow the correct product applications to ensure even coverage and avoid clumping.

Mowing

Newly laid BuffaloTurf

After 2-3 weeks your turf should have grown enough to receive its first haircut. Consider the tips below before mowing:

  • Check that the turf has rooted in all areas so as to avoid the mower or whipper snipper pulling at unrooted turf sections

  • Mow at a height that removes approximately the top 1/3 of turf blade

  • Ensure your mower blades are sharp

  • Collect and remove clippings

Established Buffalo Turf

Frequency

Mowing your established Buffalo Turf will have differing requirements throughout the year depending on weather. Typically during the warmer growing months you will need to mow your lawn every 2 weeks at a minimum. Allowing your Buffalo Turf too much time in between mowing can cause many undesired effects like over thatching and other inconsistencies leading to an unhealthy lawn.

Height

As a guide, Buffalo lawns should be mowed to a height of approx. 40-50mm, this may vary depending on the amount of shaded/sunny areas. Shaded areas may grow more sparse and high, sunny areas more dense and thatchy, so some height adjustments may be required as you mow. During hot months a little more height is be needed to help protect the roots below which can dry out if mowed too low.

Grubs

As with all turf types grown in South East Queensland, they are susceptible to various grubs which are unfortunately a natural climate and environmental symptom of where we live. Grubs can decimate any lawn in a very short period of time and are usually prevalent during the warmer months. As well as the below symptoms, check your lawn regularly for any unhealthy signs. Investigate further, pull some turf apart and study the soil underneath, look for grubs and grub excretion (see photos).

Signs that you may have grubs in your lawn:

  • Visual detection of grubs or excretion

  • Sections of lawn suddenly browning off or going bare

  • Moths flying near or above your turf usually around sunset (these may be adult grubs)

  • Wasps flying near or above your turf (some wasp species use grub larvae to feed to their young)

  • Flood a section of your turf, grubs should surface to avoid drowning

You should familiarise yourself with these symptoms and call us as soon as possible if you suspect you may have a grub outbreak. For local clients we can treat your lawn (for a fee) as soon as possible or we can provide you with the correct information so you may treat it yourself.

Diseases

The most common disease in buffalo turf is leaf spot fungus which as with grubs is prevalent during the warmer months but is more susceptible during periods of rain and high humidity. As with grubs if leaf spot is left untreated it can quickly decimate sections of your lawn. Small brown or olive coloured spots are noticeable on the leaf blade (see photos) which enlarge and given the right conditions consume the turf.

Leaf spot is easily cured especially if treated early. The best cure for leaf spot however is prevention. By applying good turf maintenance practices ie mowing, fertilising and watering you can certainly minimise vulnerability by keeping turf strong to overcome outbreaks.

Avoid watering your lawn at night, this is a significant element to providing suitable conditions for leaf spot to thrive. Water turf in the early morning which gives the turf every chance to remain dryer for longer.

Signs that your turf may have leaf spot:

  • Small round or elongated brown/olive coloured spots on leaf blades

  • Patches browning off throughout lawn

As with grubs, you should familiarise yourself with these symptoms and call us as soon as possible if you suspect you may have a leaf spot outbreak. For local clients we can treat your lawn for a fee as soon as possible or we can provide you with the correct information so you may treat it yourself.
